"Premier is
dedicated to the advancement of patient safety and offers Zebra the
opportunity to further expand the adoption of bar coding to improve
outcomes and quality of care at hospitals nationwide," says Debbie
Murphy, global practice leader, life sciences at Zebra Technologies.
"This agreement is a clear indication that today's leading healthcare
organizations are embracing bar coding as a proven and reliable
patient safety strategy. Our thermal bar code wristband printers and
patient identification wristbands provide the necessary foundation for
reducing medical errors by ensuring accurate patient information is
always available at the point of care. This helps to facilitate a
number of patient safety initiatives, from medication administration
and lab specimen collection to blood transfusion verification."
Patient identification wristbands and other bar coding applications
have been shown to substantially reduce costly and dangerous medical
errors. According to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems
Society (HIMSS), an estimated 10 percent of U.S. hospitals currently
utilize bar code technology.
Zebra is a leading manufacturer of specialty thermal printing
solutions including wireless, mobile and high-volume label and
wristband printers designed to meet the needs of the healthcare
industry. Zebra's thermal printers produce patient wristbands
on-demand, helping to minimize waste and expense. The Z-Band(R) Direct
and Z-Band QuickClip(TM) patient identification wristbands enable
healthcare providers to meet patient safety and privacy standards,
including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization's
(JCAHO) 2007 National Patient Safety Goals. In addition, Zebra's
antimicrobial wristband coating further improves the safety and
quality of care by inhibiting the spread of dangerous and costly
hospital infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), as many as two million patients acquire infections
in U.S. hospitals annually, causing an estimated 90,000 deaths each
year. Zebra's antimicrobial wristband coating effectively eliminates
S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli bacteria, the three leading
causes of nosocomial infections in the United States.
