Semiconductor Leader Sees Bright Future for the Indian Electronics

STMicroelectronics, one of the world's leading suppliers of
semiconductor solutions across the spectrum of electronics
applications, today hosted a special event, "ST DAY in India," in New
Delhi, which took place in the presence of Thiru Dayanidhi Maran,
Minister of Communication and Information Technology, and Shir Jainder
Singh, the IT Secretary. During the event, senior managers of the
company presented strategic overviews of the world and the regional
electronics and semiconductor markets, with particular emphasis on the
rapidly growing Indian electronics market. |

With
industry analysts expecting electronics manufacturing in India to grow
at a rate some 5.5 times greater than the overall worldwide growth
rate, India is poised to become a major player in the worldwide
electronics manufacturing industry and ST emphasized the depth of
support and the breadth of products, platforms and technologies that
it offers customers in India.

technology in all the market segments that offer the most exciting
growth opportunities in India's electronics industry," said Thierry
Tingaud, STMicroelectronics' Corporate Vice-President and Emerging
Markets Region General Manager, citing digital multimedia, automotive
electronics and smartcard/RFID applications among the examples. "In
fact, ST is the world's number one supplier of set-top box chips, the
number one supplier of dedicated chips for automotive applications and
the number one supplier in the fast- growing market for ultra-high
frequency RFID chips."

skills to support the rapidly- growing electronics manufacturing

customers because our Greater Noida R&D center, which has grown from
four people in 1987 to over 1700 today, has been closely involved in
developing so many of our important products and platforms."
During the event ST unveiled the first set-top box chip entirely
designed in India. The STi5107 MPEG decoder, along with its
accompanying software, was designed and implemented at the Greater
Noida R&D center, using state-of-the- art design tools and application
software integration techniques. The chip includes advanced security
features designed to provide a secure and low-cost solution for the
standard definition Pay-TV market.
