Fort Wayne, IN -- Solstice Medical, LLC, announced recently the availability of their MD3™ Tags, a pioneering line of patent pending, medical grade rigid RFID tags. “We’re pleased to introduce the first ultra high frequency (UHF) Gen II radio frequency identification tag technology specifically designed for reusable surgical devices” said President & CEO, Daniel Sands. “The MD3 tag designs elevate traditional RFID tag performance and address three key requirements of the medical device industry: exponential improvements in read distances on metal, the ability to withstand repeated high temperature autoclave cycles and biocompatibility.”

“Performance, reliability and minimum size are all essential requirements for RFID tags for the medical device industry”, states Michael Westrick, Chief Technology Officer at Solstice Medical. “Our smallest MD3 tag (12.7mm x 3.3mm x 1.3mm) can be reliably read at distances of one to three feet when attached to metal instruments and equipment which is ideal for item level identification. The larger MD3 configuration (58.5mm x 19mm x 3.8mm) can generate read distances up to fifteen feet and is well suited for set or case level tracking. Our designs are able to withstand hundreds of repeated autoclave cycles and are constructed of FDA approved materials to ensure safety”.

According to Sands, “Customizable high performance tags are the leading edge of Solstice Medical’s DOCK to The adaptable MD3 tag technology can be embedded within or attached to a diverse range of medical devices, including surgical instruments, surgical instrument cases and surgical implants. “The medical device industry demands and we are providing improved asset traceability and visibility to meet increasing regulatory control requirements through the use of standardized UHF RFID technology, which facilitates broad, cost effective adoption from point of manufacturing through supply chain locations and into hospitals”, concluded Sands.
