Serco implements an inventory tracking system for military parts
and materials using IntelliTrack RFID software and Symbol Technologies
mobile computers at Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Code 2622,
EHF Satellite Communications Branch, San Diego, CA.

Company™, today announced a joint inventory tracking solution that was
effectively implemented at the Extremely High Frequency Satellite
Communications (EHF SATCOM) branch of the Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR)
Systems Center in San Diego, CA. SPAWAR provides fleet engineering
services and information technology resources to the U.S. war fighter,
managing information essential to successful military operations. The
solution was integrated in conjunction with Serco, a designer of
innovative service solutions for government, institutional and
commercial customers. |

Serco worked
with IntelliTrack to develop a solution that bridged SPAWAR’s current
government configuration management software with Intellitrack’s Fixed
Assets RFID software, utilizing Symbol’s MC9060-G RFID mobile
computers to help ensure the efficient inventory of parts and
materials. The solution enables high-value military parts to be tagged
with a passive RFID tag and stored by location in the RFID system. As
parts are transfered to new locations or moved through assemblies,
inventories are updated by operators using the IntelliTrack software
program in conjunction with Symbol’s RFID mobile computers.
Previously, conducting an inventory of 85 circuit card assemblies (CCA)
in an EHF system terminal took approximately two hours to complete.
With passive RFID tags installed on each CCA, the inventory can now be
completed in less than five minutes. The time required to inventory
one EHF terminal is reduced to less than 1/24th of the previous time.
“Fixed Assets RFID is a leading technology in the automated data
collection industry. In live tests, it was able to decrease physical
inventory time by 75 percent,” said James Budniakiewicz, President of

institution, like SPAWAR, utilizing this new and efficient
technology.”
The EHF SATCOM branch of SPAWAR tracks high-value government-owned
equipment and manages a very large configuration management database.
With IntelliTrack’s Fixed Assets RFID software, SPAWAR can change
asset locations easily using Symbol’s handheld RFID mobile computer as
materials move through different locations or assemblies. The use of
RFID technology allows for the reconciliation of materials in
real-time, drastically reducing SPAWAR’s manual inventory time. Parts
and materials are instantly recorded as missing, invalid or valid upon
scanning a location, allowing the operator to verify each part’s
status. Through the use of this system, inventory time and human error
are greatly reduced. With a more accurate database, SPAWAR will
decrease expenditures and require fewer spare parts to be purchased.
